Sowerby blue malachite pressed glass vase RD 319519 (1878)
One of a pair of small vases by SOWERBY in blue malachite pressed glass. Each embossed on base with nice clear Sowerby peacock mark and Registered Design lozenge mark for 20 March 1878. Lozenge mark corresponds with registered number 319589 (and the vase design is illustrated in Sowerby’s pattern book IX (1882), page 6, as pattern no. 2199). Dimensions: 55mm high, top rim diameter (excluding handles) 63mm, foot rim diameter 44mm. Weight 102 and 110gm. Unusual to find them in true pairs.
Because of their small size, these ‘vases’ are often thought to be, and are often sold as, salts.
